Wildflower Cottage

A short-term rental design project in

Marcellus, New York

Project Overview

Wildflower Cottage was designed as a calm, experience-driven short-term rental that blends cottage charm with a wellness-inspired guest experience. Located just outside Syracuse in Marcellus, New York, the property was developed to offer guests a peaceful retreat that feels intentionally slower, softer, and connected to its natural surroundings.

The design draws from a soft cottage aesthetic built on warm neutrals, organic textures, and light-filled spaces. Rather than relying on heavy theme styling, the approach focused on creating an environment that feels effortless, welcoming, and emotionally restorative for guests seeking a relaxing escape.

Spa-style outdoor amenities, including a hot tub and sauna experience, help anchor the property as a wellness-forward getaway. Inside, the layout was designed to support group stays while maintaining a sense of calm and visual cohesion throughout the home.

The result is a short-term rental that functions as both a relaxing destination stay and a thoughtfully designed STR asset positioned for guest comfort, memorable experiences, and strong listing appeal.

Design Strategy

This home was designed for guests seeking a slower, wellness-oriented getaway experience. The target guest profile includes couples, girls’ trips, small group retreats, and families looking for a peaceful escape within driving distance of Syracuse and the Finger Lakes region.

Market analysis revealed that many nearby vacation rentals leaned heavily toward either traditional rustic cabins or generic suburban interiors. This created an opportunity to differentiate through a softer cottage aesthetic that emphasizes calm, warmth, and emotional comfort rather than heavy theming or rustic styling.

Performance goals were directly tied to guest experience and booking behavior. The design prioritized:

  • A calming, wellness-inspired aesthetic that aligns with retreat-style travel

  • Strong visual cohesion for listing photography and first impressions

  • Comfortable shared spaces that support group relaxation

  • Durable materials suitable for frequent STR turnover

  • Outdoor spa amenities that enhance the stay experience

  • Market differentiation through a soft, airy cottage identity

The result is a property that performs as both a restorative guest retreat and a well-positioned short-term rental within the regional travel market.
